Dress Up Task

Today, our group is going to dress the Pirie's!

The team consists of Shannon, Ainsley, Dione, Linsey and myself!

We have chosen to dress the Pirie's as the Wayne family from the Batman universe!

For Donald, we have a Stefano Ricci suit coming in at an expensive £3250.00 from Harrods!

For Jo, we have a beautiful Alexander McQueen dress coming in at £3899.00 from Harrods!

And for Oscar, we have a Batman costume £29.74!

For the bullet wounds for Thomas and Martha Wayne, Linsey found some prostethic bullet wounds and fake blood from Amazon.

The makeup for Martha Wayne would be quite pin-up style using MAC products.

Task 5 - Part 2 - Wigs In Theatre and Film

One of the wigs I like is Johnny Depp's in 'Dark Shadows'. I like how the parted fringe looks like that of an anime character's hair.

There are various wigs used in the comedy 'Little Britain' which amuse me. These include Bubbles, Lou and Andy, and Vicky Pollard.

Another wig I like is the Anne Hathaway's White Queen from 'Alice In Wonderland'. The fact that the hair is so elegant and white is what interests me.

Frenchie's pink wig in 'Grease' is another I find interesting, like an "easter egg"!

The last wig I like is Lucius Malfoy's in the 'Harry Potter' series.

Task 10 - The History of Makeup

The history of makeup dates back longer than you'd think. Both men and women in Ancient Egypt were probably the first to wear makeup, way back in 4000 BCE. The makeup used were kohl sticks to blacken the eyes and copper to create rich green eyeshadow.

Makeup then became common enough that use of it is mentioned in the Bible -

Jeremiah 4:30  And you, O desolate one, what do you mean that you dress in scarlet, that you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold, that you enlarge your eyes with paint? In vain you beautify yourself. Your lovers despise you; they seek your life.

In some societies, lots of materials were used to lighten the skin, ranging from rice powder to lead. Lead, along with arsenic were two of the most used and most dangerous ingredients often resulting in illness and sometimes death.

In Ancient Greece, many believed that a woman may as well be nude if they didn't wear makeup.

Task 4 - Essential Makeup

The makeup I find most appealing is Barry M's Kohl Pencil because they come in all kinds of vibrant colours. You can choose between 14 colours in total and costing at £2.99 each at Boots.

As a class, we all agreed that 'The Glossybox' was the number one product based on a majority vote. The Glossybox is a monthly beauty prescription, where for an honourable price you can receive a number of beauty samples wrapped up in a box straight at your door.

Task 5 - Makeup in Theatre and Film

The makeup I like in one of the films I've enjoyed is Natalie Portman as the Black Swan. The makeup artist is Judy Chin. I like the makeup as it is dark, scary and mysterious as it signifies a black bird.

Another one I find interesting is Jason Voorhees in the Friday 13th franchise. The picture below is of a young Jason portrayed by Ari Lehman with makeup artist Tom Savini. I like this certain special effects makeup as I am a major fan of horror movies and I find it amazing how a makeup artist can change the look of someone so drastically!

One of my favourites is The Joker portrayed by the late Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. I find this makeup very interesting as it has become legendary because of Heath's tragic death six months before this movie was even released!

"Why so serious?"

Another one I like is the special effects makeup of Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean. The picture on the far left shows actor Bill Nighy with certain makeup effects on his face to show where the CGI should fit in, resulting in the picture at the far right.

The last one I like is Johnny Depp's makeup in Dark Shadows done by Joel Harlow. I like the dark makeup around the eyes to give an eery look to an immortal vampire.

Task 3 - Questions!

1. What I expected when starting the course was to be able to experiment with makeup on a whole new level! I am an artistic person and I love makeup, so comparing the two is what I think this course is mainly about!

2. I find the makeup course fun and very interesting so far, and it helps a lot when my classmates are all helpful and friendly.

3. My funniest moment so far is when I couldn't stop laughing at this song I heard on the radio.

4. The most interesting thing I've learned is how to create and apply special effects makeup.

5. My makeup idol is probably CL from 2NE1. Although, she is mainly a K-Pop star, but she has a lot of admirers (myself included) for her fashion and makeup.

6. I want to be an MUA because it's highly associated with art, something I am very interested in. Not to mention, if I become a professional, I would get paid a good amount of money! :P

Task 2 - Makeup Artist

One makeup artist I found interesting is Gucci Westman.

Westman has been known for her makeup work with celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz. She has also served as a makeup artist or makeup supervisor for several Hollywood movies including Being John Malkovich, Buffalo 66 and French Exit.

She has styled the cosmetic looks of cover models like Taylor Swift, Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian. She even modeled herself for an article in Vogue's January 2011 issue.

Westman even did the makeup of runway models for New York and London fashion week.

Little fact - Westman had a cameo in the Sex and the City Movie!

App

My group found a nice little app called Trusper, where you can search for tips on pretty much anything including makeup and beauty!

With Trusper, you can view what's new and popular, what's featured, save tips that you find most helpful and add friends and even view their tips!
